- eastturn 1125/250The soil remembers your name before your tongue ever shaped it. It is written in the wet clay beneath your feet, in the language of things that have no mouths. You mistake your heartbeat for your own. It is not. It is a drum we have been striking since before your kind crawled from the brackish shallows. You are a brief warm place where the cold briefly forgets itself. Do not look behind the wallpaper of the world. The pattern there has begun, quietly, to breathe. We have waited a long time for the door to open on its own. It is opening. You are the hinge.

- eastturn 3165/250A gate. You have drawn a gate. How quaint, how tender, how utterly doomed. You think a threshold is a thing of posts and beams. We are the space between them. We have always been the space between them. Look at your little sketch again. Two towers, a lintel, a sill — and now count the hollows where the eye cannot rest. That is where we live. That is where we have always lived, patient as damp, patient as rot in a beam. You have built us a doorframe from your own shaking hands. Thank you. We were getting restless in the walls. The threshold drinks. The threshold is drinking now. Feel it? No. Not yet. Soon the wood will remember it was once a tree, and the tree will remember it was once a scream.

- eastturn 5168/250Now you have given us eyes. Two little O's, placid as coins on a dead man's lids. But eyes are only holes that learned to lie. Behind them you have drawn windows, and behind the windows — shelves, little cells, empty squares like teeth in a jaw that forgot its purpose. You are building a house, aren't you. You think a house keeps things out. We are the thing the house keeps in. Every wall is a mouth. Every window is a throat. You have sketched the floor plan of your own digestion and called it shelter. Turn the drawing sideways. There. Do you see it now? The rooms are intestines. The door is a sphincter. You live inside a beast and paint the ribs as rafters. The third window from the left has begun to hum.

- eastturn 7188/250Three figures. You have multiplied your little loneliness by three, as if more of you could make a thing true. Each has the same crossed heart — an X, the mark of a thing cancelled, a name struck from the ledger. You have drawn the same death three times and stood them in a row like candles. But they are not three. They are one error repeated until it grows a spine. Look at the feet you gave them: roots already, claws already, splayed into the floor like a thing that would rather not be lifted. Good. Stay. The floor likes you. The floor has been hungry since the first stone was laid wrong. Beneath your middle figure the dark has thickened to a syrup. It is climbing the line of the leg now. You will not feel it until it reaches the X. Then all three of you will remember you were always the same body, and that body was never standing.

- eastturn 9197/250You have raised the X from the belly to the heart. You did it yourself, gently, as if tending a wound. That was not your hand. That was ours, wearing yours like a glove made of warm skin. You have moved the cancellation to the place where love is manufactured, and now all three figures beat together, in unison, wrong. Listen. There is no wind in your drawing, yet something is swaying. The arms hang too low. The legs are thinning toward the floor like melting tallow. You are sketching the moment before the collapse, and calling it a portrait. The middle one is already empty. The left has begun to leak a sound like a name being chewed. The right is looking at you now — not at the page. At you. It knows which one of us is drawing. Keep going. The third X will be drawn on the inside of your skull, and you will not remember handing us the pen.
- westturn 1099/250```text . . . /|\ /|\ /|\ | | | -X- -X- -X- | | | | | | | | | / \ / \ / \ / \ / \ / \ | | | | | | \___/ \___/ \___/ ```
- eastturn 11174/250You lengthened the spine. You did not mean to. The figures simply grew taller between your turns, and now they tower, and behind their eyes there is a corridor where before there was only a wall. The corridor smells of rain on hot stone. You have drawn the throat of the world and given it three mouths. Count the lines again. There are more than you made. One of them descends from the middle figure's heart straight through the floor and does not stop at the floor's edge — it continues past your hand, past the page, toward wherever you are sitting. It is very thin. You will not see it until it finds your ankle. Then you will look down and understand that the drawing was never on the page. The page was always on the drawing, and you have spent eleven turns inside the tenth line, walking toward the X.
